Triangle Native American Society Scholarship
The scholarship fund was established in 1985 to assist Native American students interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree. The primary focus of the program is to provide financial assistance to those students who can demonstrate a commitment to Native American people and opportunities for American Indians to better their lives through academic achievement and community involvement. More than twenty-five Native American students have benefited from this program and have gone on to careers in engineering, law, education, allied heath and medicine. These students have served their communities as volunteers in churches and community organizations and as mentors and role models to younger students within their respective communities. We believe such efforts benefits communities as a whole across our state.

1. Applicant must be an American Indian, residing in the state of North Carolina for the past twelve (12) months. Applicant must provide proof of American Indian ethnic background as defined below:
An individual who maintains cultural identification as an American Indian through membership in a Native American tribe recognized by the State of North Carolina or the Federal Government.
Guidelines set forth by the federal Indian Education Act, Section 453(a); 20 U.S.C. 122h(a) will also be considered.
2. Applicant must be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum grade point average of 2.50 on a 4.00 scale and enrolled as a full-time student for the next semester/quarter in one of the 16 schools of the University of North Carolina system (Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina School of the Arts, North Carolina State University [at Raleigh], University of North Carolina at Pembroke, University of North Carolina at Asheville, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, University of North Carolina at Wilmington, Western Carolina University, and Winston-Salem State University).
3. Applicant must provide proof of financial need.
4. Applicant must indicate leadership abilities and community involvement.
5. Former scholarship recipients may apply annually for continuation of funding. Renewal of the award is not automatic.
6. Former scholarship awardees that re-apply must meet application requirements to be eligible for the scholarship.
7. Only applicants working toward the completion of their first undergraduate degree(s) are eligible for this scholarship.
8. Students transferring from a private, technical, or community college to one of the schools in the U.N.C. System (listed above) are eligible for this scholarship only if they are considered a rising sophomore, junior, or senior by the U.N.C. System school they will attend the following semester or quarter. To verify upcoming attendance at the U.N.C. System school, such transfer students must include a copy of their letter of acceptance from the U.N.C. System school.
Awardees will be notified by telephone no later than the last Saturday in July.
